The Dental Implant Process at Dee Dental Paisley

04 March 2024

Missing teeth can throw your bite out of alignment, altering your facial shape and impact your overall health. They can also make you self-conscious about your smile.

To address this, your dentist might propose a solution involving artificial teeth securely anchored within or near the jawbone through dental implants.

At Dee Dental Paisley, we understand the importance of a beautiful smile and the role it plays in your life. We offer a modern, digitalised, and efficient dental implant process that can replace missing teeth in as little as 6-8 weeks.

Our team is dedicated to providing you with the highest quality, affordable dental care, and our expertise in cosmetic dentistry in Glasgow and digital dentistry can work together to transform your smile.

What are dental implants?

Dental implant treatment is the most durable, long-lasting, and effective solution to replace missing teeth available on today's market. It is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments we offer.

Implant treatment consists of a titanium screw that is placed in your jawbone, which acts as a replacement root. Once the area is healed, you will come back to the practice for a second appointment to permanently fix your bespoke tooth onto the screw.

After your procedure, you will be left with a permanent tooth that blends in seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth. The dental implants function just as a normal tooth would, with no extra dental care required.

Benefits of dental implants

Unlike other cosmetic dentistry options, dental implants offer an array of unique benefits, making them the preferred choice for many.

We have explored some of the main benefits below:

Dental Implants can last a lifetime

Dental implants can offer a lifelong solution. Unlike dental bridges, which typically have a lifespan of around a decade, dental implants are designed to last a lifetime.

Crafted from biocompatible titanium, they seamlessly integrate with the jawbone. This non-toxic material ensures they are not rejected by the body, making them a robust and enduring choice for tooth replacement.

Act like natural teeth

One of the primary benefits of an implant is its ability to fully restore chewing power. In fact, most patients find it nearly impossible to distinguish between their natural teeth and the implant tooth.

This means they can enjoy their meals with complete normalcy, and their daily oral care routine, including brushing and flossing, remains entirely unaffected.

Prevent bone loss

Dental implants are bone-saving heroes. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area begins to deteriorate due to the absence of stimulation. If an implant is not promptly placed within the first year, the bone volume can decrease by 25%, and this bone loss persists over time.

You might think that dentures could be a solution to this, however – dentures can exacerbate this issue, as they tend to loosen and rub against the bony ridge, gradually eroding it.

On the contrary, implants not only replace the missing tooth but also the root. They restore normal chewing function, providing the necessary stimulation for natural bone growth, preventing bone loss.

Maintain the stability of neighbouring teeth

When a tooth is missing, the adjacent ones may gradually shift towards the gap, causing misalignment. This not only impacts your bite, chewing ability, and appearance but can also create interference that complicates future tooth replacement.

Additionally, a misaligned bite may lead to TMD (temporomandibular joint) issues, potentially resulting in pain and headaches.

Help prevent gum disease

When a tooth goes missing, it leaves behind a gap that can unwittingly become a breeding ground for trouble. This vacant space serves as an open invitation for food particles and harmful bacteria to take up residence.

These unwelcome guests can accumulate in the gap, creating a prime environment for gum disease to thrive.

Prevent facial sagging and premature aging

The loss of bone due to missing teeth can have an unintended consequence: a gradual collapse of the lower third of the face, where the distance between the tip of the nose and the chin diminishes.

This transformation can manifest through the development of excess wrinkles around the mouth, thinning lips, and a more pointed chin, collectively contributing to an appearance that belies one's actual age.

Digital dental implant impressions

The dental implant process at Dee Dental Paisley

By using the most advanced dental technology and having access to our own in-house dental specialist, Dr. Sam Elassar, we can provide a modern approach to dental implants for our valued patients.

Through digital scanning, we have streamlined the process to ensure a faster, smoother, and more comfortable experience.

Let us explore how the process works in more detail:

Initial consultation:

Our process begins with a comprehensive initial consultation, where we assess your suitability for dental implants. During this visit in our dental clinic in Glasgow, we will discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and ensure you feel comfortable and informed

We will also take digital scans that can be sent remotely to our specialist, eliminating the need for additional visits to the practice.

In just one or two days, we will let you know if you are a suitable candidate, allowing us to get the implant process underway within the same week.

Once all has been approved and signed off by Dr Sam, we will then invite you back into the practice for the first stage of the procedure.

Two-step procedure:

First appointment:

The first step of the implant process involves placing the implant screw into your jawbone. To ensure your comfort, we use local anaesthetic, making the experience pain-free.

Dr. Sam Elassar, our experienced implantologist, guides this step with precision. Thanks to our advanced digital dentistry and pre-surgical planning, this procedure is fast, efficient, and relatively pain free, although you will experience some levels of discomfort post-surgery.

Waiting Period:

Following the implant placement, it is crucial to allow time for the area to heal. During this period, which can last up to several months, the implant fuses with the bone.

Once the implant is placed you may require stitches to position the gum back, we use resorbable sutures that will dissolve by themselves in 2-3 weeks. The implant must then be left for 8-12 weeks often up to six months, undisturbed, for the bone to heal around them.

Usually, we check the implant at three months or less. During this time, it is important to follow the aftercare instructions you will receive at the end of your procedure, and we will check in with you regularly to see how you are doing.

Of course, if you have any concerns during this time, you can message us via our WhatsApp chat with your team within reach at all times

Do not worry about missing gaps in your smile, we will always make sure you have a temporary tooth fitted to maintain aesthetics.

Second Appointment:

Once the gums have healed and we are happy with the integration status of the implants we will aim to start the restoration phase.

This phase may take several appointments for us to achieve the optimum appearance of the crown or bridge, and to ensure you are happy with your new smile!

We work closely with the lab to make sure the component flows with the rest of your teeth in terms of size, shape, and colour. Your input is important, which is why we will work together to create your new smile.

The cost of dental implants in Glasgow

The cost of dental implants will of course vary based on several factors, such as:

  • The number of implants needed
  • The type of restoration (crown or bridge).
  • The existing state of your mouth and weather any prep-work or pre-surgery is needed.

Our team uses Straumann implants, the world's number one implant system, ensuring the highest quality. During your consultation, we will provide you with a clear understanding of the cost and discuss our available interest-free payment plans.

Aftercare and recovery

Post-procedure, some discomfort and swelling are normal. You may occasionally notice slight bruising, but it typically fades within a week. Gum tissue in the implant area might change in appearance temporarily.

Dr. Sam Elassar will discuss whether painkillers or antibiotics are necessary to aid the healing process.

And remember; you are not alone during this time! We are here to support you every step of the way. You can reach out to us through WhatsApp, social media, in-person visit, or simply give us a call if you have any concerns.
