White Fillings (Composite Bonding)

15 December 2021

Are white fillings better?

Modern white fillings are much stronger than those from several years ago. They are also bonded to the tooth to effectively seal the margin. Traditional amalgam fillings just plug the hole and do not seal the margins or reinforce teeth. They are, however, very strong and a well-placed amalgam filling can last for several years.

Do most dentists use white fillings?

These days, white fillings are the standard among most dental practices around the world. There are two reasons for this: white fillings just look more natural than silver fillings, and white fillings are much safer than their silver counterparts.

How many fillings are normal?

The average British adult has 3 fillings, however it is not uncommon for people to have slightly more (or less) than this number.

What are the signs that a filling is needed?

  • Signs of Damage. Fillings sometimes fracture and break.
  • Pain in the Tooth. You can't always see obvious signs of damage on a filling.
  • Floss Shredding. If you have a filling in the side of a tooth, then you can't see any or all of the filling.
  • Bad Breath and Bad Tastes.
  • Colour Changes.
