Brushing Advice

06 December 2021

6 simple steps to keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  1.  Brush at least two times a day. Use an Oral B electric toothbrush, they are much better! Do this before you floss/use interdental brushes
  2.  Use fluoride toothpaste - minimum 1450ppm
  3. Replace your old toothbrush every 3-6 months
  4. Clean between your teeth once a day with floss/ interdental brushes
  5. Drink water with fluoride
  6. Mouthwash is only useful when used at a separate occasion to brushing. It must be alcohol-free to prevent oral cancer and help keep your gums healthy!

It is very important to properly brush your teeth and gums every day to prevent tooth loss and gum disease. Gum disease is caused by the bacteria found in plaque and has three stages: gingivitis, mild to moderate periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis.

Extra bonus tips:

  • Brush your tongue, it can prevent potential problems of the oral cavity such as tooth decay and periodontal disease (plus it improves your breath). The presence of bacteria on the tongue can lead to halitosis or bad breath. Brushing your tongue on a regular basis can remove such harmful bacteria.
  • Use a medium toothbrush with multiple bristles in different directions
  • Electric toothbrushes do decrease more plaque and gingivitis than manual toothbrushes. After three months of use, plaque was reduced by 21 percent and gingivitis by 11 percent. Oscillating (rotating) toothbrushes seem to work better than just vibrating toothbrushes
  • Look for mouthwashes that contain fluoride. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay and strengthens tooth enamel and is completely alcohol-free.
